QUERETARO, Mexico – Henry Martin was all smiles on Sunday night following Club America’s 1-0 victory over host Queretaro in the first weekend of 2018 Liga MX Clausura play.
One of three winter arrivals from Club Tijuana (DF Emanuel Aguilera, MF Joe Benny Corona), the 25-year-old forward debuted in style for the Aguilas, scoring the game’s lone goal with a strong right-footed finish at the Estadio Corregidora.
“I’m very happy,” said Martin of his debut with the 12-time Mexican champion. “It is always good for a forward to score.”
Martin’s strike was significant at multiple levels.
For the 25-year-old forward, it was his first Liga MX goal since week four of the 2016 Clausura, when he found the back of the net in Club Tijuana’s 2-2 draw at Veracruz.
As for Club America, it was the Mexico City’s side first goal since week 17 of the 2017 Apertura, a span of 413 minutes.
Yet, do not expect Martin to obsess over any scoring droughts. What matters most to the once-capped Mexico international is helping his team in any way he can.
“I don’t focus on numbers,” he finished. “It is a game. I have fun and I have to do what (head coach) Miguel (Herrera) asks of me, taking advantage of the opportunity and contributing my grain of sand.”
