• Cruz Azul, Monterrey and Club Leon will find out their Round of 16 opponents in the 2021 SCCL Draw

MIAMI, Florida – There is no shortage of star power and Concacaf pedigree among the Liga MX participants in the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League.

This week Club America, Cruz Azul, Monterrey and Club Leon will find out their Round of 16 opponents in the 2021 SCCL Draw, with the hope that they can continue Liga MX’s dominance in the tournament.

The 2021 SCCL will be Club America’s sixth time in the tournament, a remarkable achievement considering that their first appearance came in the 2013-14 edition.

The seven-time Concacaf champions took home the SCCL trophy in 2014-15 and 2015-16, but have seen their fortunes change in their last two appearances with semifinal defeats to Toronto FC in 2018 and Los Angeles FC in 2020. Las Aguilas are back in the big dance after qualifying as the 2019 Liga MX Apertura runners-up.

Right behind Club America in all-time Concacaf championships is Cruz Azul with six, and La Maquina will be making a Liga MX-leading seventh SCCL appearance in 2021 after qualifying as the first-place team in the 2020 Liga MX Clausura at the time of the Covid-19 suspension.

Tied with Santos Laguna for the most wins in SCCL history (34) and first in points earned (114), Cruz Azul have reached the semifinal stage four times and stood atop the SCCL mountaintop in the 2013-14 edition when they defeated fellow Liga MX side Toluca in the Final.

As 2019 Liga MX Apertura champions, Monterrey is seeking to extend their superiority as the most decorated team in SCCL history.

In five previous appearances, Rayados have won the title an astounding four times (2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2019), with the 2016-17 edition marking the only time Monterrey failed to win the SCCL when entered.

Rounding out the list of Liga MX participants will be Club Leon, the 2020 Liga MX Clausura regular season second place team at time of Liga MX COVID-19 suspension.

It will be just the third appearance for Club Leon in the SCCL and they will hope to advance from a round for the first time in club history after failing to do so in the 2014-15 and 2020 editions.
