Philadelphia Union’s Cavan Sullivan becomes youngest scorer for an MLS side in competition history

Cavan Sullivan had a night to remember as the Philadelphia Union defeated Defence Force, 7-nil, in the second leg of their Round One series to secure a Round of 16 berth. It was a historic performance by the midfielder, as he collected a brace to become the youngest player to score for an MLS club in the Concacaf Champions Cup (since 2008-09) at just 16 years, 4 months, and 29 days – the first player to record a brace at such a young age.

Sullivan broke the record set just 24 hours earlier by FC Cincinnati’s Ademar Chávez, who scored against O&M FC at 17 years, 1 month, and 13 days. 

MLS sides go unbeaten, display defensive solidity

MLS teams had a standout week in the Champions Cup, going unbeaten in the second leg fixtures at home, with five wins and a draw. Notably, MLS clubs achieved the feat without conceding. 

Nashville SC, Los Angeles FC, FC Cincinnati, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and the Philadelphia Union claimed victories, while LA Galaxy played out a goalless draw in its encounter. 

Goals aplenty: 24 goals in fourth week of 2026 Champions Cup 

The final week of Round One the 2026 edition presented a notable 24 goals scored across five matches, with only one match finishing without goals. 

Nashville SC defeated Ottawa 5-nil, LAFC came out on top 1-nil against Real España, FC Cincinnati earned a 9-nil victory over O&M FC, Vancouver Whitecaps FC won 2-nil against CS Cartaginés, and Philadelphia Union overcame Defence Force FC with a 7-nil scoreline. 

FC Cincinnati led to victory by seven different scorers

FC Cincinnati secured its spot to the Round of 16 with a 9-nil shutout of O&M FC. Seven different scorers led the MLS club to victory in front of its home fans: Kenji Mboma Dem (x2), Gerardo Valenzuela, Tom Barlow, Ademar Chávez, Stiven Jiménez, Alvas Powell, and Stefan Chirila.

LAFC and LA Galaxy to battle against reigning Central American Cup and Caribbean Cup champions

After booking tickets for the next round, California clubs Los Angeles FC and LA Galaxy are both set to meet defending regional champions in the Round of 16. LAFC will clash against reigning three-time Concacaf Central American Cup winners LD Alajuelense, while LA Galaxy will take on Concacaf Caribbean Cup Winners Mount Pleasant FA.
