HEREDIA, Costa Rica – Hernan Medford is no longer Herediano’s head coach, the Costa Rican club announced Tuesday.
The 49-year-old was handed the managerial reins on February 21, 2016, leading the Florenses to two league titles (2016 Verano, 2017 Verano).
He most recently guided Herediano to an undefeated regular season in the 2017 Costa Rican Invierno (16W-6D-0L), but it fell to Perez Zeledon (agg: 0-1) in the final. The 54 points accumulated during the regular season surpassed the record of 53 set by Alajuelense in the 2014 Invierno.
After a playing career that spanned parts of three decades, Medford is best known for scoring against Sweden in the 1990 FIFA World Cup and netting the game-winner in a World Cup qualifier at Mexico -- played at the Estadio Azteca -- on June 16, 2001.
As a manager, he has coached in four different countries (Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico). Medford’s most significant accomplishments include leading Saprissa to the 2005 CONCACAF Champions’ Cup title and a third-place finish in the 2005 FIFA Club World Cup. He has also piloted the national teams of Costa Rica (2006-08) and Honduras (2014).
In 2018, Herediano will be making its eighth appearance in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League -- the most of any Costa Rican club – and will open play in the Round of 16 against Tigres.
