LEON, GUANAJUATO Elias Hernandez’s early first half goal was enough to earn Club Leon a 1-0 win over Guastatoya of Guatemala in the second leg of the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 on Tuesday night at the Estadio Leon in Leon.

With Tuesday’s result and last week’s 2-0 victory in the first leg, Club Leon earned their first ever SCCL series win with a 3-0 triumph on aggregate.

Club Leon wanted to make sure there would be no hope of a Guastatoya comeback and went right to work to find a goal.

The score arrived in the 11’ via a long ball played up to Hernandez, whose exquisite control allowed him to finish past Guastatoya GK Adrian De Lemos for a 1-0 lead.

Guastatoya tried to get back on level terms in the match, but the chances were still mostly going Club Leon’s way and it took a top-notch stop from De Lemos to snuff out a chance for Santiago Ormeno in the 23’.

Guastatoya kept at it and nearly got their first goal of the series midway through the second half, but FW Luis Landin was unable to steer home a shot at the far post while under pressure from Club Leon GK Rodolfo Cota.

While there were some late cracks at goal from Club Leon to try to extend their advantage, the Hernandez goal was all they would need to secure their spot in the next round.
