MEXICO CITY – Cruz Azul announced Tuesday that it will not retain head coach Guillermo Vazquez after the Mexico City-based side was eliminated from the Liga MX playoffs at the quarterfinal stage by Toluca, 4-1 on aggregate.
The 46-year-old led La Maquina to its only title in 16 years, when it overcame Atlante 4-2 on penalty kicks, following a scoreless draw in the Clausura 2013 Copa MX final.
Vazquez assumed the manager’s position in July 2012 and had guided the club to the quarterfinals of the 2013-14 CONCACAF Champions League, where it is to face the USA’s Sporting Kansas City next year. The five-time confederation club champion advanced by winning Group 3 with a perfect 4-0-0 record.
