MIAMI, Florida – The two Liga MX semifinalists in the 2022 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League, Pumas and Cruz Azul, were both in action over the weekend in domestic play ahead of Tuesday’s second leg.
Each side hit the road, beginning with Cruz Azul traveling to Mazatlan on Friday where they earned a 1-1 draw.
The two teams traded chances in the early going before Mazatlan opened the scoring in the 39’ to take a 1-0 lead. An initial clearance from the Cruz Azul defense came to the feet of Roberto Meraz, who unleashed a shot from well outside the penalty area and beat Cruz Azul GK Sebastian Jurado for the goal.
Cruz Azul regrouped at halftime and struck back just 41 seconds into the second half on a giveaway deep in the Mazatlan area, ultimately allowing Ivan Morales to cross for Angel Romero, who stabbed home the 1-1 equalizer.
Both teams were keen to find a winner, with Mazatlan’s Bryan Colula firing a shot off the post in the 67’ and a hard hit from Cruz Azul’s Christian Tabo in the 75’ nearly breaking through, but in the end the two teams would have to settle for a share of the points.
Pumas were also in action on Friday in a visit to Puebla, which ended in an exciting 2-2 draw.
After playing in midweek, Pumas were a bit slow getting out of the gates, as Puebla raced out to a 2-0 lead on the brink of halftime.
The home side broke the deadlock, 1-0, in the 12’ when Pablo Parra converted from the spot after a handball was called in the Pumas area.
Puebla then doubled their lead to 2-0 in the 42’ when a cross from Gustavo Ferrareis made its way past three Pumas defenders and met the sweeping left foot of Maximiliano Araujo, who banked in a shot off the post for the goal.
Just when Puebla thought they would go to the halftime break with a two-goal lead, Pumas swung the momentum back in their favor when Diogo de Oliveira’s cross from the right flank found Rogerio, who finished to cut the gap to 2-1.
Pumas set out to find an equalizer in the second half and it would finally arrive in the 86’ thanks to Jorge Ruvalcaba’s sliding shot off a cross from Washington Corozo to complete the 2-2 scoreline.
The other two semifinalists, Seattle Sounders and New York City FC, both of MLS, had their matches postponed and will be played at a later date.
