GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – Despite falling 3-2 to Municipal in the second leg of the 2015 Clausura final on Saturday, Comunicaciones captured the crown 4-3 on aggregate.
A 2-0 victory in the series opener proved to be the difference, helping the Cremas set a pair of Guatemalan records by winning their sixth straight title and 30th overall; marks previously shared with long-time rival Municipal.
The Rojos didn’t give way easily, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first half through goals from Maximiliano Callorda (15’) and veteran Carlos Ruiz (21’). Comunicaciones would not be denied, though, rallying to equalize late in the match as Jose Contreras (77’) and Agustin Herrera (82’) each found the back of the net for the second straight match.
Ruiz netted the game-winner with a minute left in normal time, but it wasn’t enough to impede Comunicaciones’ step into history.
"Before the game we talked about everything that could happen because mistakes occur in football, but thank God we were able to score in the second leg," said Comunicaciones head coach Willy Olivera, who dedicated the victory to his late mentor, Grill Luis Prieto. "The team did what it always does…fight with everything and go for history.”
Cremas captain Juan Jose Paredes recalled that when he joined the team in 2009, it was going through a title drought.
"When we arrived at the club, things were very different," said the 30-year-old goalkeeper. "I remember we met with teammates and say that we have to overcome this. Municipal had won five consecutive championships. This was something we had to conquer.
"We always had the vision of our objective, the challenge we faced each season was to win both tournaments. Today, we gave account of ourselves and have also changed the fans of Comunicaciones. Now, the support is total, there were no boos. We are all one family and that's important.”
Both Comunicaciones and Municipal have qualified for the 2015/16 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.
