MIAMI, Florida โ The 2023 Leagues Cup group stage came to an end on Monday night with four matches.
Central Group 2 wrapped up at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois with Puebla winning a penalty shootout 10-9 with the Chicago Fire after a 1-1 draw. While Puebla picked up the extra point, it was not enough to advance, as both Chicago and Minnesota United qualify for the Round of 32 from the group.
The Columbus Crew SC enjoyed a prolific scoring night at home at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio in a 4-1 final versus seven-time Concacaf champions Club America in Central Group 1. Cucho Hernandez bagged a brace, as Columbus won the group with the result, while Club America finished second.
Toluca also banged in four goals as they topped the Colorado Rapids 4-1 Toluca at Dickโs Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado in Central Group 4. Toluca lay claim to first place in the group, while Colorado are eliminated. Nashville SC finish in second and join Toluca in the knockout round.
Childrenโs Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas was the setting for the finale in Central Group 3 and it ended 1-0 in favor of home side Sporting Kansas City against Liga MX giants Chivas. Johnny Russellโs first half goal proved enough to secure a second-place finish in the group, while Chivas are eliminated.
