COMMERCE CITY, Colorado – The Colorado Rapids announced Tuesday the acquisition of defender Edgar Castillo from Liga MX side Monterrey on a one-year loan with an option to buy following the conclusion of the 2018 campaign.
Castillo, a defender, has earned 18 caps for the United States, debuting in a 3-1 win over host Denmark in an international friendly on November 18, 2009. He was part of the squad that captured the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup crown, appearing in one game.
“Coming to Colorado is a wonderful opportunity for me as both a player and a person,” said Castillo. “I can’t wait to get on the field and help this team achieve its goals for 2018 and beyond.”
The 31-year-old, who has spent his entire professional career in Mexico, was part of two Liga MX championship sides with Santos (2008 Clausura) and Club Tijuana (2012 Apertura). He has also played for Club America, Tigres, San Luis, Puebla and Atlas.
Internationally, Castillo is just one of two players to earn a cap for both the U.S. and Mexico. He made his Tricolor debut on August 22, 2007, against Colombia and would go on to appear in four games.
Castillo has also played in seven career Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (SCCL) games: Santos (2008/09: 3 games/0 goals) and Club Tijuana (2013/14: 4/0). He has also competed in two editions of the Copa Libertadores: Club Tijuana (2013: 6/1) and Atlas (2015: 6/0).
Colorado will open 2018 SCCL play in the Round of 16 against current MLS champion Toronto FC (1st leg: February 20, home; 2nd leg: February 27, away).
