MIAMI, Florida – 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League finalists Club America remain atop the Liga MX table after playing to a 0-0 draw with rivals Chivas on Saturday night in the Clasico Nacional.
There were chances for both sides throughout, including 2020 Concacaf Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship Golden Ball winner Alexis Vega hitting a shot over the crossbar in the 13’ and Chivas GK Raul Gudino getting low to deny a Henry Martin header in the 63’.
In the end, the two fierce rivals would have to settle for a share of the spoils, but the result was enough to keep Las Aguilas (21) a point ahead of 2021 SCCL Final opponent Monterrey (20), who were 2-1 winners at Santos Laguna.
After a scoreless first half, Arturo Gonzalez broke the deadlock by pouncing on a loose ball in the area and firing in the for the score and a 1-0 Monterrey lead.
Brian Lozano smacked a shot off the crossbar in the first half, but hit all net in the 75’ when he converted a penalty kick, but the three points would go to the Rayados, with Duvan Vergara sneaking in a header off a Maxi Meza cross for the winning goal in the 90+4’.
Two other sides in the mix for top spot in the Liga MX table had differing results. Atlas now sit fourth with 19 points after a 2-0 victory versus Club Leon through goals from Anderson Santamaria (8’) and Diego Barbosa (60’).
Meanwhile, a 2-1 home loss to Atletico San Luis means that Toluca are still in third place with 20 points.
