MEXICO CITY – Just days after capturing the Liga MX Apertura crown, Club America officially presented Gustavo Matosas as its the new head coach on Thursday.

The 47-year-old replaces Antonio Mohamed, who led the Aguilas to a Mexican-record 12th title with a 3-1 aggregate triumph over Tigres.

"The greatness of this club, the great fans that it has, but above all, when we chatted, I sensed it was unanimous decision,” said Matosas, describing why he accepted the post.  “The unanimous decision of the Board was what made me decide.  I said I want to go for the new players and the base of the team that is there.  I didn't have to think much in order to come."

Matosas previously managed Leon, leading it to two consecutive Liga MX championships (2013 Apertura, 2014 Clausura).

The former Uruguayan international resigned from the club in November after it failed to advance past the group stage of the CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) and missed out on a place in Apertura playoffs.

Club America is still competing in the current CCL and will meet Saprissa in the quarterfinals, starting on February 25 in Costa Rica.
