PANAMA CITY, Panama – Sergio Moreno struck late and Chorrillo captured its second Panamanian title, defeating Rio Abajo 1-0 in the 2014 Clausura final on Saturday at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez.
With the triumph, Chorrillo also earned a place in the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League.
It was a bittersweet evening for Rio Abajo, which was relegated to the Liga Nacional de Ascenso after accumulating the fewest combined points of the 10 teams participating in the Apertura and Clausura regular seasons.
The decisive Chorrillo goal came one minute into stoppage time. Francisco Vence sent a ball into the area that was headed by Julian Velarde towards Sergio Moreno, who beat goalkeeper Oscar McFarlane with a header of his own.
“We were the best,” said Chorrillo head coach Julio Medina III. “My team wanted to be champions. They played the final like champions.”
Chorrillo and Tauro – the 2013 Panamanian Apertura winner – will be Panama’s representatives in the next CONCACAF Champions League.
