TUCSON, Arizona - For just the second time in its history and first since the 2011, the Colorado Rapids will compete in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (SCCL), starting February 20 with a round of 16, first-leg encounter against visiting Toronto FC.

Despite the distance between appearances, new Rapids head coach Anthony Hudson can count on defender Edgar Castillo bringing plenty of SCCL experience to the table.

The 31-year-old signed with the MLS side during the offseason after a 13-year career in Mexican football, where he appeared in both the 2008/09 and 2013/14 SCCLs with Santos Laguna (3 games) and Club Tijuana (6 games), respectively. 

Needless to say, Castillo is keen to make the most of his third crack in the competition.

"We are fine-tuning all the details for the match against Toronto," he told CONCACAF.com.  "We want to go in strong.  Playing in the Champions League is a plus for any player and, personally for me and my teammates, this tournament means a lot."

The 2018 SCCL is ringing in changes, with every round being decided over two legs.  Castillo thinks the new format will bring out the best in players, commenting: "I'd say that the new format makes me better.  One can focus on one opponent, and whoever wins, moves on."

The New Mexico native - capped 18 times by the United States - believes the modifications will make the event more engaging.

"I think it's much more exciting for the fans," Castillo remarked.  "Each phase is important and each moment of each match is important."

Success in the SCCL won't come easy for the Rapids, with current MLS champion Toronto FC being the initial obstacle.

"Toronto is a complete opponent," commented Castillo.  "They have good players, so we have to go into it in the best way because they are a great opponent."

After competing for eight different clubs in Mexico, he is eager to get started with Colorado.

"I spent 13 years in Mexican football," Castillo finished.  "It is a radical change, but I'm happy about the opportunity.  I hope to have a good season and I'm going to give my best to this team."
