Action from the Caribbean Club Championship game between Club Barcelona Atletico (dark blue jersey) and Elite SC on March 1 2017, in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica – With Haiti’s Racing FC having already sealed advancement to the finals, first-round play in the 2017 Caribbean Club Championship resumed Wednesday with the opening matches in Group B and Group C.
Here are some highlights:
GROUP B
- Cibao FC (Dominican Republic) struck for nine first-half goals on the way to a 16-0 win over Police FC (Montserrat). Woodensky Babalito (2’, 12’, 15’, 48’) and Domingo Peralta (34’, 41’, 42’, 51’) scored four goals each, while Charles Herold Jr. (45’, 90’+3), Jose Jaquez Jr. (4’, 25’) and Patrick Soko (68’, 83’) added two each.
- Host Don Bosco’s bid to qualify for a second straight appearance in the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League ended in a 1- draw with Unite Sainte-Rosienne (Guadeloupe). USR went ahead 1-0 through Steeve Desert, before Geraldy Joseph (38’) replied for the Haitian power.
GROUP C
- Chiqui Meza (54’, 71’) scored two goals as Club Barcelona Atletico (Dominican Republic) earned a 4-0 win over Elite SC (Cayman Islands).
- Trevaughn Harriet (13’, 31’) netted a brace and Grenades FC (Antigua & Barbuda) held on to defeat host Montego Bay United, 3-2. A goal by Naz McBernette (67’) gave the visitor a 3-0 lead midway through the second half, but MBU’s late rally fell short.
The winners of the four remaining first-round groups will advance to the final round, where they will join two-time defending champion Central FC (Trinidad & Tobago) and Group A champion Racing FC.
Last year, Central FC defended its Caribbean title by prevailing over fellow Trinidadian side DirecTV W Connection in the final for the second straight year, 3-0.
The champion of the Caribbean Club Championship earns a place in the newly re-formatted CONCACAF Champions League, while the second-, third- and fourth-placed clubs will participate in the Confederation’s newly launched club championship tournament for Caribbean and Central American teams, which kicks off in August.
