SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Saprissa announced Tuesday that it signed defender Francisco Calvo to a two-year contract.

The 22-year-old, who appeared in three matches for Costa Rica in the 2001 FIFA U-20 World Cup, spent last season with Santos de Guapiles.

"It is an important step in my career, returning to where I played my youth football and where I was formed,” said Calvo.  “It is a very important challenge.  I want to be champion and perform well in CONCACAF.”

Calvo has spent the majority of his career with Herediano, also making stops at Perez Zeledon and Denmark’s FC Nordsjælland.

He has been capped three times by Costa Rica, all of them at the 2011 Copa America.

Saprissa qualified for the 2015/16 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League after winning the 2014 Invierno title.
