TAPACHULA, Mexico – Cafetaleros scored late in the first half to earn a 1-0 victory over Guatemalan champion Suchitepequez in the 2016 Copa Mesoamericana on Thursday at the Estadio Olimpico de Tapachula.
Dario Carreño, who has 12 career Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (SCCL) goals, converted a penalty kick in the 39th minute for the Ascenso MX side, beating goalkeeper Jose Rodriguez with his right foot.
With the result, the tournament host will meet Jaguares de Chiapas – a 2-0 winner over Puebla in the doubleheader’s opener – in the final on Saturday. Suchitepequez, which is preparing for the 2016/17 SCCL, will face Puebla in the third place match.
