MIAMI, Florida – Arcahaie of Haiti will be out to make some history when they face Mexican giants Cruz Azul in the second leg of their 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 series on Tuesday night at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico.
The Caribbean side has already made history in the last year by becoming the first Caribbean side to reach the semifinal stage of the Scotiabank Concacaf League and also as the fourth Haitian club to qualify for the SCCL.
After a 0-0 draw in last week’s first leg, a goal-scoring draw or a win would make Arcahaie the first Caribbean team to advance past a round in the SCCL since the inception of the Round of 16 format in 2018.
However, history shows that it will not be an easy feat. In 20 all-time matches between Caribbean clubs and Liga MX teams on Mexico soil, the Caribbean sides have a 1W-0D-19L record, with the lone win being Trinidad and Tobago’s Joe Public over Atlanta in the 2008-09 SCCL.
GK Gooly Elien was a rock in the Arcahaie goal in the first leg, along with a very organized and sturdy defense, and they will be called on again to limit Cruz Azul’s weapons.
Elias Hernandez, Jonathan Rodriguez and Walter Montoya are among the players who can put any opponent to the sword and they will try to spark La Maquina to victory.
