SAN MIGUEL, El Salvador – Aguila announced Tuesday that it has hired Julio Cesar Dely Valdes to replace Daniel Messina as its head coach.
Messina will not return after leading the club to the 2014 Salvadoran Apertura final, where it fell to Isidro Metapan on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw on December 21. He is expected to take charge of the Huracan youth division in his native Argentina.
Dely Valdes -- a standout with Panama as a player and as a manager -- is leaving Arabe Unido, which he only started to manage in August, compiling a 7W-4D-2L record in domestic league games. The 47-year-old had guided Panama to the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup final and the final round of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup during a three-year stint (2010-2013).
Assisting Dely Valdes in El Salvador will be his twin-brother Jorge, who reached an agreement with Tauro to step down as its head coach earlier in the day.
Aguila has captured 15 Salvadoran league crowns, but none since the 2012 Clausura,
