MEXICO CITY – Ahead of its bid to win an eighth CONCACAF club title, Club America announced Wednesday the acquisition of midfielder Joe Corona, defender Emanuel Aguilera and forward Henry Martin; all through the Liga MX draft.
The trio competed together in the recently-completed 2017 Liga MX Apertura for Club Tijuana, which – along with Club America – will play in the 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (SCCL). Aguilera and Martin joined on permanent deals, while Corona is on a one-year loan.
United States international Corona has spent eight years with Club Tijuana, during which he had loan spells with Veracruz (2015) and Dorados de Sinaloa (2016). The 27-year-old has featured in 140 Liga MX matches with Club Tijuana and was a member of the squad that won the 2012 Apertura.
Corona boasts SCCL experience, playing in all eight matches Club Tijuana’s run to the 2013/14 semifinals. He has also played in three CONCACAF Gold Cups for the U.S., winning titles in 2013 and 2017 (9 games/3 goals).
Born in Mendoza, Argentina, Aguilera, 28, came to Liga MX in 2016 and played 43 matches with the Xolos.
The 25-year-old Martin, who has one cap for Mexico, scored three goals in 94 appearances for Club Tijuana.
Club America also announced the departure of two players: defenders Pablo Aguilar and Miguel Samudio. Both had been with the Aguilas since 2014 and were part of Club America’s SCCL winning teams in 2014/15 and 2015/16.
