SAN NICOLAS DE LOS GARZA, Mexico – Fresh off a sixth Liga MX title, ambitious Tigres has set its sights even higher in 2018, aiming to repeat as domestic champion and claim an international crown.
UANL has finished as runner-up in the last two Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League (SCCL) editions.
“I have no doubt that can happen,” said Tigres attacker Lucas Zelarayan, who has played in 11 career SCCL matches. “We have many national team players. There is an internal competition that brings out the best of everyone and, for that reason, we won the last (Liga MX championship. There are demands to be the champion at this club.
“We also have [the SCCL] and we are going to try to fight on both fronts, but we are going step by step and fulfilling our own goals.”
Through two matches in the 2018 Liga MX Clausura, Tigres is 1W-0D-1L, opening with a 2-1 loss at Puebla and bouncing back with a win over visiting Santos by the same score.
“Tigres is one of the best team on the continent, I have no doubt,” Zelarayan finished. “The internal competition is very high. I compete with national team players, so that obliges me to always be at 100 percent.”
Tigres will kick off its 2018 SCCL campaign in the Round of 16 on February 20 in Costa Rica against Herediano.
