MEXICO CITY -- Club America announced Tuesday that Mexico international Miguel Layun has signed a contract with Spain’s Granada.

The move marks a return to Europe for the 26-year-old defender, who played with Italy’s Atalanta for six months before being transferred to the Mexican power in December 2009.

Layun played in 141 Liga MX games with the Aguilas, winning the 2013 Clausura and 2014 Apertura titles.

Since earning the first of his 22 caps for Mexico in 2013, the former Veracruz standout has become a mainstay.  He appeared in four qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, including both legs of the decisive intercontinental playoff against New Zealand.  In Brazil, Layun started all four of the Tricolor’s matches.

The transaction means that Club America will be without one of its stars for CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series against Saprissa, which starts on February 25 in Costa Rica.  Layun had not played in the group stage, but did take the field three times in the 2013/14 edition of the tournament.
