MARRAKESH, Morocco – Four different players scored first-half goals to lead Monterrey to a 5-1 win over Egypt’s Al Ahly in the fifth place match at the 2013 FIFA Club World Cup at Marrakesh Stadium on Wednesday.

In a rematch of last year’s third-place encounter, won by the Rayados 2-0 in in Yokohama, Japan, Monterrey tied a record for goals scored in a FIFA Club World Cup match.  Manchester United originally set the mark in a 5-3 win over Gamba Osaka in the 2008 semifinals.

While Monterrey rued missed scoring chances in a 2-1 extra-time loss to Raja Casablanca in the quarterfinals, the three-time CONCACAF Champions League winner wasted little in finding the back of the net against another African opponent.

In the third minute, influential Humberto Suazo settled a cross from Effrain Juarez, took a touch and turned left to play Neri Cardozo in on goal.  Cardozo tapped the ball inside the far post from eight-yards out to give Monterrey the early advantage. 

Al Ahly equalized just five minutes later, when Emad Meteab settled Ahmed Kenawi’s long ball on the left side of the box with his right foot and netted with his left from an acute angle.

Cardozo turned playmaker in the 22nd minute, slipping Cesar Delgado behind the Al Ahly defense and the Argentine midfielder beat stranded goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy from 12-yards out to put Monterrey in front, 2-1.

Five minutes later, the Rayados increased their lead.  From two-yards inside the penalty area, defender Leobardo Lopez took a Cardozo corner kick off a bounce and volleyed it off Ekramy, who could only watch the ball roll over across line. 

After being denied first by Ekramy on a 21-yard free kick and secondly by the crossbar on a lob moments later, Suazo finally got the goal he deserved in the final minute of the first half.

American referee Mark Geiger pointed to the spot after Wael Gomaa tripped up Lopez inside the box.  Suazo fired his effort low and to the right of Ekramy to give Monterrey a 4-1 halftime lead with his second career Club World Cup goal. 

Delgado made it 5-1 in the 65th minute with a first-time finish from the edge of the six-yard box off Suazo’s perfectly weighted feed.

It was Delgado’s second goal of the match and sixth all-time in the competition, making him the all-time leading scorer in FIFA Club World Cup history.
