MEXICO CITY – Club America announced Friday via its social media platforms that Miguel Herrera will return to the club as head coach, replacing Ricardo La Volpe, who departed earlier in the month.
He most recently guided Club Tijuana to a first-place finish in the 2017 Liga MX Clausura regular season. The Xolos, however, were eliminated from the playoffs by Tigres at the semifinal stage (agg: 0-4).
Prior to taking the Tijuana helm in November 2015, Herrera was in charge of Mexico from October 2013 – July 2015. The former Mexico international guided the then-struggling side to victory over New Zealand in a two-legged intercontinental playoff for a berth in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. In Brazil, the Tricolor advanced to the Round of 16, where it fell to the Netherlands.
In July 2015, Herrera navigated Mexico to its first international championship since 2011, capturing the CONCACAF Gold Cup title after defeating Jamaica, 3-1, in the final. Just two days after lifting trophy, the now 49-year-old was let go following an alleged physical confrontation with a member of the media at Philadelphia International Airport.
Herrera’s only championship as a manager at the club level came in the 2013 Liga MX Clausura with Club America, which he coached from November 2011 before going to the national team.
Club America, which did not qualify for the 2017 Clausura playoffs, and Club Tijuana earned places in the 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.
