SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – Alianza named Milton Melendez as head coach Monday, a day after Daniel Fernandez resigned from the post.
The 49-year-old Melendez, a former Alianza player and fan favorite from the late 1980s to 2000, has held various positions within the club over the years, most recently as assistant coach. He was an El Salvador international, scoring three goals in six World Cup qualifiers.
Fernandez, a 53-year-old Argentine, lasted slightly more than six months at the helm
The Albos (2W-0D-4L, 6 points) have started the 2016 Salvadoran Apertura unevenly, occupying eighth place following a 1-0 loss to visiting Municipal Limeño on Sunday, its third setback in four outings.
Two points behind the table-topping New York Red Bulls (1-1-0, 4), Alianza (0-2-0, 2) sits second in Group F of the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.
Alianza returns to action on September 6 with a domestic encounter at Isidro Metapan.
