BAYAMON, Puerto Rico – A pair of three-goal performances from Luis Gabriel Rey and Martin Zuñiga paced Club America to a 10-1 win over Puerto Rico Bayamon FC in a CONCACAF Champions League Group 8 encounter at the Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel on Wednesday night.
Rey netted all three of his goals inside the opening 34 minutes as the Aguilas (2-1-0, 7 points) broke their own record for most goals in a CCL first half -- set when they scored five in the opening 45 minutes in the first meeting with Bayamon (0-0-3, 3 points) -- by scoring six before halftime.
Club America, which moved three points ahead of Comunicaciones (1-1-0, 4), also set a CCL mark for most goals in a match, as well as the largest margin of victory.
The five-time CONCACAF club champion scored three goals within the first five minutes, the first by Rey in the third minute when he took Alexis Rivera’s attempted clearance of Luis Mendoza’s lob into the box off his thigh and deposited the ball into the net.
One minute later, Gil Buron tapped in a Gonzalo Diaz cross.
Rey then took a ball in the 18th minute that caromed off two defenders and put it inside the far post for a 3-0 lead.
The onslaught continued in the 14th minute when Diaz ran onto a near own-goal parried away by goalkeeper Maximiliano Torlacoff and sent the rebound inside the far post.
The 34-year-old Rey completed his hat-trick in the 34th minute, playing a free kick quickly to Moises Velasco, who laid it off for the team captain. Rey hammered a 20-yard shot to give the Mexican powerhouse a 5-0 lead.
In the 42nd minute, Zuñiga put a low, 25-yard shot inside the left post for a six-goal margin.
Bayamon pulled a goal back in the 48th minute as Hosman Ramos took a long ball from midfield and chipped on-rushing goalkeeper Hugo Gonzalez for his first CCL goal.
Zuñiga made it 7-1, crashing the back post and heading in a Diaz cross in the 58th minute.
Nine minutes later, substitute Emilio Sanchez gave America an 8-1 advantage by sliding in the rebound of a Sergio Rodriguez shot.
Three minutes from fulltime, Zuñiga headed home a Velasco corner kick and followed it up with a first-time volley a minute later for the final goal.
After Comunicaciones plays at Bayamon on September 25, the Guatemalans will travel to Mexico City for a meeting Club America in the final group match October 21.
