CFU Club Championship: Group 3 Recap (Day 2)

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica -- Central FC (Trinidad & Trinidad) opened its bid to repeat as the Caribbean Football Union Club Championship champion with a 6-0 victory over Scholars International on Friday at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.

Jason Marcano (64’, 90’+2) led the way with two goals, while Jamal Jack (2’), Michael Darko (16’), Darren Mitchell (68’) and Jem Gordon (88’) each contributed with one.

The Sharks will meet host and fellow 2015/16 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League Montego Bay United – a 4-0 winner over Scholars International on Wednesday – in Sunday’s in Group 3 finale. A draw would see Central advance to the semifinals next month on goal difference.

“We are the defending champions and we really want back our title,” said Central FC head coach Dale Saunders. “We will do anything to win back our title.”

After conceding 10 goals in its two games, Scholars International was eliminated from the tournament, but head coach Colin Rowe believes his side will benefit from the trip.

“Honestly, the payers were still fatigued form Wednesday’s game,” he conceded. “We don’t have a big squad and we made three changes to the starting team from Wednesday and one player (Jermaine Haughton) was not even on the list today.

“This competition was good experience for these players and a learning process. This was the first time they were playing in a competition like this and up against professionals. They did well, good exposure for my players.’

Scholars finished the game with 10 players after Gabre Dickens was shown his second yellow card in the 71st minute.
