PROVIDENCE, Guyana -- Central FC (2-0-0, 6 points) earned a 3-1 win over host Alpha United (1-0-1, 3 points) on Sunday at the Guyana National Stadium to finish atop the Group 1 in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship and advance to the semifinals.
Needing a win to progress due to inferior goal difference, the Trinidadian side was led by Atuallah Guerra’s two-goal performance. The 27-year-old attacker opened the scoring in the 16th minute and finished it with five minutes remaining in normal time, converting from the penalty spot.
Sean De Silva accounted for the Sharks’ other goal in the 17th minute, while Konata Mannings pulled one back for Alpha United with a well-taken free kick at the stroke of halftime.
“We moved the ball fast and two early goals in the game really killed it for us,” said delighted Central FC head coach Terry Fenwick. “We were very disappointed to concede just before halftime, but in the second half we didn’t give any chances up and I thought it was a good, professional, solid performance.”
The CFU Club Championship semifinals will be played on May 22 at a venue to be determined. The eventual finalists and the winner of the match for third place will qualify for the 2015/16 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League.
