Francisco Calvo scored in the 65th minute for the 23-time Costa Rican champion, whose winless streak against Mexican sides in the CCL reached seven games (0-1-6).
While both teams have 1-1-0 records and four points each, Herediano enjoys a slim lead on the strength of goal differential (plus four to plus two).
Boselli, who replaced forward Martin Bravo at halftime, could not have found a better time to score his first CCL career goal. A corner kick was swung into the penalty area and the Argentine headed past goalkeeper Daniel Cambronero from eight yards.
In fact, Boselli tried to play hero again four minutes into stoppage time, but Cambronero saved his header inside the box only seconds before the game was called.
Herediano appeared to heading towards a historic result on Calvo's goal. Only moments after a Leon defender cleared the ball off the goal line, a cross from the right side was whipped into the area. Calvo headed beyond goalkeeper Christian Martinez and into the far right corner for a 1-0 lead.
The Costa Ricans will visit Isidro Metapan on September 18 in the next group game.
