MIAMI – The 2025 Concacaf Central American Cup continues with CS Herediano hosting CSD Municipal in Group B on Thursday at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San José, Costa Rica.
Both clubs will aim to bolster their respective bids for a top two finish and the accompanying berth in the Quarterfinals.
CS Herediano enters as the fourth-place team in the group with three points. Marcel Hernández and Jurguens Montenegro lead Herediano in the 2025 CAC with two goals each.
The Costa Rican side needs at least a victory to help its Quarterfinal hopes. The club will also need an equal or better goal difference than Real España, if the Honduran side wins its encounter against Sporting San Miguelito.
CSD Municipal controls its own destiny as the second-place team in the group. A victory would confirm the Guatemalan side in the Knockout Stage, but a draw may be enough, depending on the result of the Sporting San Miguelito-Real España match.
Municipal will be without one of its scorers as José Martínez received a red card in the club’s previous CAC appearance.
Historic series
This will be the first-ever meeting between CS Herediano and CSD Municipal in the history of the Concacaf Central American Cup. For the Costa Rican side, it will mark their fourth match against a Guatemalan opponent in the competition, having recorded two wins and one draw so far. Meanwhile, this will be the third time that Municipal faces a Costa Rican club in the tournament, with one win and one loss in previous encounters.
Historically, the two teams have met five times, with Herediano winning three and CSD Municipal claiming two victories.
Their only Concacaf Champions Cup meeting came on April 9, 1989, in Matchday 1 of the Central Group in Zone 2, where Herediano earned a 1-0 win.
They clashed twice in the 1975 Copa Fraternidad Centroamericana, with both games going in favor of the Costa Rican side: a 2-1 win in Matchday 5 of the first group round, and a 1-0 away victory in Matchday 4 of the second round.
Municipal's two wins came during the 1998 edition of the Torneo Grandes de Centroamérica. The first was a 1-0 result in Matchday 5 of Group A, followed by a 1-0 away win in Matchday 12 of the same group.
