Historic series

Saprissa and Motagua will face off for the third time in Concacaf Central American Cup history, with the Costa Rican side holding the edge with one win and one draw.

Their first meeting took place on October 25, 2023, in the first leg of the Play-In for the 2024 Champions Cup, held at Estadio Nacional Chelato Uclés in Tegucigalpa. The match ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw. Agustín Auzmendi scored twice for the “Aguilas Azules,” while Michaell Chirinos and Warren Madrigal found the back of the net for the visitors.

The second leg was played on November 1, 2023, at Estadio Ricardo Saprissa in San José, where the home team cruised to a resounding 4-0 victory. Ariel Rodríguez and Kendall Waston scored with headers, while Orlando Sinclair and Luis Paradela also added their names to the scoresheet.

Historically, the two clubs have met 19 times, with Saprissa dominating the series with 11 wins to Motagua’s single victory, along with seven draws. Among the most memorable clashes are two finals: the 2007 Interclub Cup Final, won 1-0 by Motagua thanks to a goal from Josimar Nascimento — the club’s only international title — and the 2019 Concacaf League Final, decided in the first leg by a goal from Johan Venegas on November 7 in San José. The second leg ended in a 0-0 draw in Tegucigalpa on November 26.
