GUATEMALA CITY – The 2025 Concacaf Central American Cup concluded with CSD Xelajú MC and LD Alajuelense drawing 1-1, with the latter winning 4-3 on penalties, and lifting their third trophy in a row, in the Second Leg of the Final on Wednesday at Estadio Cementos Progreso in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
The hosts nearly took the lead in the 21’ in a set piece opportunity, but Alajuelense captain Celso Borges cleared a header from Yilton Díaz off the line
Alajuelense came close to breaking the deadlock with a double opportunity in the 36’, as Guillermo Villalobos initially rattled the left post with a header following a delivery into the box by Joel Campbell.
Ronaldo Cisnero placed Alajuelense in the lead in the 74’, converting an attempt from the penalty as he notched his second goal in the series.
Juan Cardona leveled the proceedings for Xelajú in the 82’, with a right-footed thunderbolt from outside the box.
With the two sides tied 2-2 on aggregate after 180 minutes, and even on away goals, extra time and a penalty shootout were needed to decide the winner.
Xelajú came close to taking the lead in the 92’, with Steven Cárdenas’ was denied by Alajuelense goalkeeper Bayron Mora.
Mora had another key intervention for Alajuelense in the 111’, making a crucial stop to repel a thumping header from Hárim Quezada.
The penalty shootout began with the attempt from Xelajú’s Jesús López saved by Bayron Mora at the bottom-right corner. Diego Campos followed up by converting his attempt for Alajuelense to take the lead.
The next two kickers were on target, with Hárim Quezada scoring for Xelajú and Santiago van der Putten for La Liga. Xelajú captain Jorge Aparicio then slotted the ball at the bottom-left corner and Alexis Gamboa struck for Alajuelense.
Derrickson Quirós followed with another conversion for Los Chivos, before goalkeeper Darío Silva saved the attempt from Alajuelense’s Aarón Salazar.
Steven Cardenás had the chance to tie the shootout for Xelajú, but his shot was saved by Mora at the bottom-right corner.
Guillermo Villalobos concluded the shootout by scoring to secure the 4-3 win on penalties, and the title for the Costa Rican club.
By advancing to the Final, both clubs had already qualified to the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup. As champions, LD Alajuelense secured a bye to the Round of 16.
