DIRIAMBA, Nicaragua – Jorman Aguilar’s late first half strike was enough to hand Guatemalan giants Comunicaciones a 1-0 victory against Diriangen of Nicaragua in Group C of the 2023 Concacaf Central American Cup on Thursday night at the Estadio Cacique Diriangen in Diriamba, Nicaragua.
Comunicaciones now have two wins from two games and sit atop the group with six points, while Diriangen remain on one point after two matches.
It was a back-and-forth first half between the two sides, with chances for both, however, it was a moment of magic that opened up the scoring for Comunicaciones in the 40’ for a 1-0 lead.
The goal came thanks to come world class playmaking from Antonio Lopez, who backheeled a ball to split two defenders, avoided another and then played an inch-perfect diagonal ball into Jorman Aguilar, who finished past Diriangen GK Alfonso Quesada for the goal.
After the re-start, Diriangen grew into the game and started outing the Comunicaciones defense on their heels.
The home side had a golden opportunity to pull level in the 61’ when Jonathan Moncada found himself all alone in the Comunicaciones area and the ball at his feet, but his shot was swallowed up nicely by Comunicaciones GK Fredy Perez.
Despite their best efforts, the Nicaraguan hosts were unable to find a way to breach a resolute Comunicaciones back line, giving the 2021 Concacaf League winners the full three points.
