ALAJUELA, Costa Rica – The 2025 Concacaf Central American Cup resumed as the Quarter Finals began with FC Motagua earning a 1-nil win against Liga Deportiva Alajuelense at Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
Motagua had a good look early in the 7’, when Carlos Mejía found Jorge Serrano in space on the left side of the box, but his finish was high above the goal.
Creichel Pérez had a chance for the hosts in the 10’ with a right-footed hit from the top of the box that was wide off the mark.
Alajuelense was left a man down for the remainder of the match after Ronald Matarrita was shown a red card in the 15’.
Maicol Cabrera nearly scored the opener for Motagua in the 72’, with a header from the center of the box that was just wide of the upper right corner.
Mathías Vázquez struck the winner for the Honduran club in the 90’+2, finding the back of the net with a diving header from close range to capitalize on a cross from Jefryn Macías.
Motagua’s Marcelo Santos was shown a red card in the 90+5’ as both sides closed out the match with 10 players each.
Goalkeeper Luis Ortiz delivered a solid performance in goal for Motagua, recording three saves and securing a clean sheet.
Motagua will aim to defend its 1-0 lead on home soil when the sides meet for the second leg next Tuesday in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
