MIAMI, Florida – 2023 Concacaf Caribbean Club Shield champions Robinhood of Suriname will begin their journey in the 2023 Concacaf Caribbean Cup with a Group B encounter against Cibao FC of the Dominican Republic on Thursday night at the Dr. Ir. Franklin Essed Stadion in Paramaribo, Suriname.
Robinhood overwhelmed opponents in the Shield, winning all five matches while outscoring opponents 21-4. Shaquille Cairo was a big reason for that success, as he finished as the tournament’s top scorer with 10 goals.
Cairo has a knack for scoring in Concacaf competition, having scored a goal in four games during Robinhood’s Round of 16 finish in the 2019 Concacaf League. Jamilhio Rigters, who scored three goals in the Shield, is another one to watch.
Cibao opened the tournament last week with a 1-1 draw against domestic rivals Atletico Pantoja, so now they will look to earn their first three points away from home.
Carlos Ventura scored the goal for Cibao, while veteran GK Miguel Lloyd was a solid presence in net with five saves. Ernesto Trinidad and Daniel Leonardo are two hard workers for Cibao in the middle of the park. Trinidad had four ball recoveries against Atletico Pantoja, while Leonardo completed 73 passes.
