MARTINIQUE – Defence Force of Trinidad and Tobago climbed to the top of Group A of the 2023 Concacaf Caribbean Cup with a 1-0 victory against Golden Lion of Martinique on Wednesday night at Stade Pierre-Aliker in Fort-de-France, Martinique.
Defence Force now have four points through two games and sit in first place in the five-team group.
Defence Force had the best look at goal in the first half on a back-to-back sequence in the 35’ when Rivaldo Coryat fired at goal inside the area but was denied by Golden Lion GK Giles Meslien.
The rebound fell right to Brent Sam, who tried to turn into net from just a few yards away, but again Meslien proved decisive.
For Golden Lion, it was a long-distance effort from Alvyn Lamasine just moments before halftime, with the ball bouncing just wide of diving Defence Force GK Christopher Biggette.
After a few chances in the first half, Reon Moore would get another crack at goal at the start of the second half and this time he didn’t miss, as he collected a ball and hammered home a right-footed shot in the 48’ for a 1-0 Defence Force lead.
The Defence Force was really clicking and if not for a reaction save from Giles Meslien, Reon Moore would have scored a second in the 52’.
Golden Lion sought to get back on level terms, but the Defence Force back line thwarted any and all attempts to pocket the three points.
