Mexico, Honduras battle to scoreless draw in friendly

ATLANTA, Georgia – It was a busy weekend of international friendlies across the region for those Concacaf teams already qualified for the Third Round of Concacaf World Cup Qualifying for Qatar 2022.

A pair of Concacaf sides in Mexico and Honduras squared off in Atlanta, Georgia with neither side able to make the breakthrough in a 0-0 final.

The sides went back and forth at each other in the first half, beginning with an Edson Alvarez chance for Mexico inside the first two minutes, followed by Jorge Benguche nearly scoring for Honduras.

The best chance of the night saw Mexico’s Carlos Rodriguez fire a shot off the crossbar just shy of the half-hour mark, with Benguche getting another good crack at goal in the second before halftime.

A second half dominated by both defenses resulted in the scoreless draw, with attention now shifting toward the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup.

Last Thursday, inaugural Concacaf Nations League champions the United States defeated Costa Rica 4-0 in a friendly in Sandy, Utah.

Goals from Brenden Aaronson and Daryl Dike earned the U.S. a 2-0 halftime lead, before Reggie Cannon and Gio Reyna tacked on goals in the second half to complete the 4-0 scoreline.

Jamaica were also in action over the weekend, going up against the Japan Under-23 team in a friendly which ended 4-0 in favor of the Japanese in Tokyo. The result came five days after a solid 1-1 draw versus Serbia in which Andre Gray scored for the Reggae Boyz.
