Two Concacaf women’s referees achieve World Cup milestone

MIAMI, Florida – This Thursday, the FIFA Referees Committee announced the 36 referees, 69 assistant referees and 24 video match officials who will officiate matches at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

For the first time ever, women’s referees have been selected for a Senior Men’s World Cup, with six women traveling to Qatar.

Two of those women hail from the Concacaf region: Karen Diaz Medina of Mexico and Kathryn Nesbitt of the United States, who will each work as assistant referees during the tournament.

Overall, five referees from the Concacaf region will serve as head referees: Ivan Barton (El Salvador), Ismail Elfath (United States), Mario Escobar (Guatemala), Said Martinez (Honduras) and Cesar Arturo Ramos (Mexico).

In addition to the appointments of Diaz Medina and Nesbitt, Kyle Atkins (U.S.), Helpys Raymundo Feliz (Dominican Republic), Miguel Hernandez (Mexico), Walter Lopez (Honduras), Juan Carlos Mora (Costa Rica), David Moran (El Salvador), Alberto Morin (Mexico), Corey Parker (U.S.), Caleb Wales (Trinidad and Tobago) and Zachari Zeegelaar (Suriname) will work as assistant referees.

Concacaf will also have three video match officials in Qatar, with Drew Fischer (Canada), Fernando Guerrero (Mexico) and Armando Villarreal (U.S.) earning that distinction.
