SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – The 2022 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica kicks off on Wednesday with Concacaf nations Costa Rica and Mexico in action on the first day of matches.

Mexico will be the first to take the field, as El Tricolor go up against New Zealand in their Group B opener at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.

It is the ninth appearance for Mexico in the U20 Women’s World Cup and will feature many of the players who led Mexico to a runner-up finish at the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Under-20 Championship, including MF Natalia Mauleon, who had three goals in the CWU20.

It is also the first U20 Women’s World Cup match-up between the two nations since Mexico’s 4-0 group stage win over the Kiwis in the 2012 tournament.

Host nation Costa Rica will then take the field later that night at the Estadio Nacional in San Jose where they will face Australia in Group A.

Among the players to watch for Costa Rica will be Maria Paula Salas, who has already featured in Concacaf matches with the Costa Rican Senior Women’s National Team.

This is Costa Rica’s third appearance in an U20 Women’s World Cup and their first meeting with Australia.
