KINGSTON, Jamaica – Trinidad and Tobago and Cuba each collected key wins on matchday three of the final round of the Caribbean Zone of Concacaf Women’s Championship Qualifying on Wednesday in Kingston.
A brace from Kayla Taylor paced Trinidad and Tobago to a 5-0 victory over Antigua and Barbuda to give the Women Soca Warriors a record of 2W-0D-0L, 6 points, 8GF, 2GC.
Janine Francois got things rolling early in the 4’ and soon Taylor made it 2-0 with her first score in the 16’.
At the half-hour mark Tasha St. Louis extended the advantage to 3-0 before Taylor got her second in the 32’ to give Trinidad and Tobago a 4-0 halftime lead. Kennya Cordner would then round out the scoring in the 65’.
Trinidad and Tobago currently sits in third-place with two matches to play, while Antigua and Barbuda (0-0-3, 0, 0GF, 21GC) has been eliminated from advancing to the CWC.
In the other match, Cuba edged Bermuda 2-0 in what was a tight, cagey affair between the two teams.
Both teams enjoyed chances early on, but fans had to wait until the 31’ for the first goal when Cuba’s Lilian Perez Sandoval collected a pass in the area and fired in a right-footed shot for a 1-0 Cuba lead.
Cuba made things even more difficult for Bermuda in the 52’ when Maria Isabel Perez Torres intercepted a pass and rocketed in a shot from 30 meters out to double the lead, 2-0.
Bermuda searched for a response, but the Cuba defense held firm to see things out.
Cuba (2-0-1, 6, 11GF, 3GC) sits in second place, while Bermuda (0-0-2, 0, 0GF, 6GC) is in fourth place.
Action will resume on Friday when Antigua and Barbuda squares off against Bermuda, while Trinidad and Tobago faces host nation Jamaica.
