CARY, North Carolina -- With both teams coming off impressive performances, the United States and Panama seek their second win of the 2018 concacaf Women's Championship when they clash in a Group A match on Sunday night.
The Americans recorded a 6-0 triumph over Mexico while Los Canaleros secured a 3-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago in their respective opening matches at Sahlen's Stadium on Thursday night
Megan Rapinoe scored two goals and set up a third and Alex Morgan added two goals for the defending FIFA Women's World Cup champions. Tobin Heath and Julie Ertz scored one goal apiece for the USA, which extended its unbeaten streak to 21 games (18W-3D-0L).
While its attack usually gets most of the attention, the USA defense has racked up some head-turning defensive numbers. The Americans haven't conceded a goal in the competition in 694 minutes, spanning six full games. The last opponent to solve their backline was Monica Perez, who tallied the game-winner in Mexico's 2-1 semifinal win in the 2010 CWC.
Panama recorded its second-ever win in the competition as Marta Cox, Kenia Rangel and Erika Hernandez scored goals. Goalkeeper Yenith Bailey, 17, was credited with a shutout.
This will be the second CWC meeting between the sides. In their first encounter, Tiffeny Milbrett scored five goals in a 9-0 USA victory in Seattle at the 2002 CWC.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Mexico and Trinidad will vie for their first win of this tournament.
