SAMARA, Russia – Russian Premier League side Krylia Sovetov announced Wednesday that it has acquired Trinidad & Tobago international Sheldon Bateau on a season-long loan from Belgium’s KV Mechelen.
Bateau has been with Mechelen since September 2012 after starting his career in the TT Pro League with San Juan Jabloteh and the North East Stars.
“I have always been looking for a challenge in my own career, and I think that this club and this league will be perfect for me,” the 24-year-old defender told the Krylia Sovetov website.
Krylia Sovetov is coached by Belgian Frank Vercauteren, who has familiarity with the defender, managing Mechelen for four months in 2014.
“Of course, we have mutual respect,” Bateau said in reference to Vercauteren. “We worked together before. I know he has confidence in me and with this I think I can help the team.”
Last month, Bateau played a key role in Trinidad’s run to the CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinals. He scored in wins over Guatemala and Cuba as the Soca Warriors captured first place in Group C.
