LEVERKUSEN, Germany – Javier Hernandez set a personal mark for most goals scored in a European season on Saturday, netting twice in Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-0 German Bundesliga win over visiting Hannover to take his total in all competitions to 21.
The Mexico international’s previous best output came in 2010-11, when he struck for 20 goals in his first year with Manchester United.
After Stefan Kiessling (44’) put Leverkusen ahead 1-0 just before halftime, Hernandez converted a penalty kick (64’) and beat a defender in the left side of the box to send a low, left-footed shot from seven-yards out into the far-side netting (87’).
With those goals, the 27-year-old forward now has 13 in league play, three in the German Cup and five in the UEFA Champions League.
