This journey will commence Wednesday as the Reggae Boyz travel to the Estadio Azteca for a meeting against Mexico.
Six countries are competing for CONCACAF's three automatic places in the FIFA World Cup finals at Brazil 2014. The fourth-place finisher will engage the winner of the Oceania region on a home and away basis for the last qualifying berth.
Jamaica has not fared well at the Azteca. In its last three visits to the historic stadium, the Reggae Boyz have been outscored 12-0, losing twice in World Cup qualifiers (2001: 4-0, 2008: 3-0) and once in a Gold Cup match (2003: 5-0).
Jamaican coach Theodore Whitmore is adamant that he doesn't want a repeat of what happened in a 1-0 loss against the United States in Columbus last September. In that match, after a scoreless opening 45 minutes, Herculez Gomez netted the game-winning goal shortly after the interval.
"It is a whole tactical approach, and what we want to remember is the first-half approach against the USA in Ohio, and we don't want the same sort of thing to creep in on us," said Whitmore. "So as much as possible we don't want this Mexican team to (dominate us). We know what they have to offer and we have been working on a number of things for the game on Wednesday."
Mexico has yet to lose a game in qualifying for Brazil 2014, outscoring its opponents 15-2 in the semifinal group stage.
In the same phase, the Jamaicans had three wins (all at home), plus a draw and two losses on the road.
Demar Philllips and Dane Richards, each of whom lead Jamaica in 2014 qualifying with two goals apiece, are on the roster. The injured Luton Shelton, who also scored twice in the third-round play, is not with the squad.
