SAN JOSÉ, Costa Rica – Costa Rica will be without the services of captain Bryan Ruiz for a pair of upcoming friendlies.
The Federación Costarricense de Fútbol announced that a leg problem will force the Sporting Lisbon attacker to miss Thursday’s match against visiting South Africa and an away encounter against the United States on October 13.
Ruiz sustained the injury during a 5-1 victory over Guimaraes in the Portuguese league on Sunday.
In the 30-year-old’s place, head coach Óscar Ramirez called in Cartagines midfielder Mauricio Castillo. The 26-year-old has eight caps, but will be linking up with the national for the first time in two years.
Costa Rica will also be without Palermo’s Giancarlo Gonzalez. The stalwart defender has a muscle injury in his right leg and a sprained right ankle. Alajuelense’s Ronald Matarrita will fill the roster spot after Costa Rica completes its participation in the 2015 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Championship on Wednesday.
