TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras – Just days after qualifying for this year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup, 13 members of the Honduras under-20 national team traveled with seven under-23 players to Thailand on Wednesday for the King’s Cup.
The friendly tournament has been contested 42 times since the inaugural edition in 1968.
Jorge Jimenez, who guided the Catrachos at the recently completed CONCACAF Under-20 Championship in Jamaica, is the selection’s head coach.
"The idea is that players who managed to qualify for the Under-20 World Cup gain some international experience and, moreover, the seven that form part of the under-23 team, as recommended by (national team head coach) Jorge Luis Pinto, also gain more experience at the top level " Jimenez told the press before traveling to Asia.
Jimenez also confirmed his attendance the Under-20 World Cup draw, where the Hondurans will discover their opposition for the May 30-June event in New Zealand.
"I'll be at the draw on February 10 in Auckland,” he said. “From there, we are going to schedule a preparation tour to South America that could be in Chile, Uruguay or Argentina".
In Thailand, the Catrachos will face the national team of the host nation (February 1) and the Olympic teams of Korea Republic (February 4) and Uzbekistan (February 7).
