BRADENTON, Florida – The United States will have the chance to defend its Concacaf Under-20 Championship title in the Final after narrowly defeating Honduras 1-0 in the final match of Group G of the 2018 CU20 Qualification Stage.
The U.S. will square off against rivals Mexico on Wednesday in the Final to decide who takes home the CU20 trophy.
It was a tight, tense affair between the U.S. and the Hondurans, as a stout Catracho defense kept the high-flying U.S. attack in check during the first 45 minutes.
However, the start of the second half was a different story and a U.S. side playing with more energy and urgency was able to break the scoreless deadlock.
A deflected long ball fell right to Ayo Akinola, whose right-footed shot beat Honduras GK Oscar Reyes to make it 1-0 to the U.S. in the 51’.
From there the U.S. defense took over and saw things out to win Group G with a spotless record of 2W-0D-0L, 6 points, 5GF, 0GC.
By virtue of the result, Honduras has qualified for the 2019 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Poland.
