Costa Rica punched their ticket to the CMOQ thanks to a 3-2 aggregate victory over Guatemala in the Central American qualifying phase of the tournament. Costa Rica will be participating in the CMOQ for the seventh time and twice were champions, in 1980 and 1984, and finished as runner-up in 2004.
Costa Rica’s all-time record in the CMOQ is 9W-7D-7L, with 31 goals scored and 27 conceded. The all-time goal-scorer for the Ticos in CMOQ history is Ronald Gomez, with six goals.
The Central American side has played in three different Olympics: Moscow 1980, Los Angeles 1984 and Athens 2004. Costa Rica reached the quarterfinals of Athens 2004.
