SEATTLE, Washington -- Paolo Guerrero scored in the second half and Peru earned a 1-0 win over Haiti in the Copa America Centenario Group B opener Saturday at CenturyLink Field.

The goal was the 32-year-old’s 11th in Copa America play (he was the Golden Boot winner in the 2011 and 2015 editions) and 27th of his international career, breaking the Peruvian record he had shared with the legendary Teofilo Cubillas.

In the 60th minute, Edinson Flores delivered a left-sided cross to edge of the six-yard that Guerrero powered into the back of the net with a diving header.

Although it was making its Copa America debut, Haiti was certainly not overwhelmed by the occasion. Les Grenadiers had a chance to equalize in the final seconds, but Kervens Belfort’s close-range header off a free kick went agonizingly wide of the right post.

Flores had a pair of chances, hitting the post in the 45th minute and missing an open net six minutes after the break.

Both sides return to action on Wednesday with Haiti meeting Brazil in Orlando and Peru facing Ecuador in Glendale, Arizona.
