Municipal Limeno seek memorable debut vs. Forge FC

MIAMI, Florida – Municipal Limeno of El Salvador will get their first taste of Concacaf competition when they welcome in Canadian side Forge FC in the Preliminary Round of the 2020 Scotiabank Concacaf League on Thursday night at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador, El Salvador.

By virtue of having the second-best aggregate record among non-champion teams during the 2019/20 Salvadoran season, Municipal Limeno qualified for their first SCL and their first ever Concacaf tournament.

That is not to say that members of the squad do not have Concacaf experience. MF Edwin Sanchez played in four SCL matches with Aguila in the 2017 edition, and also has 13 appearances in the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League to his name.

After claiming the 2019 Canadian Premier League Finals, Forge are back in the SCL for the second straight year. A year ago, the Canadians eliminated Guatemala’s Antigua GFC in the Preliminary Round before falling to Honduran giants Olimpia in the Round of 16.

There is something about the SCL that brings out the best in FW David Choiniere, who scored two goals in last season’s tournament. The club will also be bolstered by the steady hand of GK Triston Henry, who registered two clean sheets in the 2019 SCL.

Thursday’s encounter marks the first ever meeting between the two teams and it is the first SCL match between teams from Canada and El Salvador.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8 PM ET and can be seen via TSN.ca/TSN App (Canada), TUDN (USA-Spanish), FS1 (USA-English), ESPN 2 (Central America) and Fox Sports 2 (Mexico).
